Change train ticket: date, boarding station or name

Pick what you want to change and how long is left before the train leaves. The answer comes with the steps, the cost and the rule it rests on.

Can you change the date of a train ticket?

An e-ticket's date cannot be changed: cancel it on IRCTC (Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation, the Indian Railways booking website and app) and book the new date. A counter ticket can be moved once to another date, same or higher class, same destination, at a reservation office at least 48 hours before the train leaves.

For a counter ticket, rule 11 of the Railway Passengers (Cancellation of Ticket and Refund of Fare) Rules 2015 charges a fresh reservation fee on a confirmed ticket, or clerkage on an RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation: a shared side-lower berth) or waitlisted one, plus or minus the fare difference. The new booking cannot be in the Tatkal quota, and if you later cancel the changed ticket, cancellation charges apply for both bookings. Vande Bharat Sleeper and Amrit Bharat II trains need 72 hours instead of 48, from 16 January 2026. For e-tickets, IRCTC's terms, updated in May 2026, say the date change facility "is not available at present"; the free change reported for January 2026 has not appeared there.

Can you change the boarding station?

Yes, once, up to the final reservation chart, about 30 minutes before departure. E-tickets change it online on IRCTC; counter tickets at a reservation counter. You then lose the right to board at the original station.

The Railway Minister announced the 30-minute limit on 24 March 2026 (PIB release), and Southern Railway confirmed it in force from 1 April 2026; before that the limit was 24 hours before departure, which IRCTC's own help page still shows. The part of the journey you skip is not refunded, and the change is not allowed for current-booking tickets, Vikalp PNRs or seized tickets. The chart preparation time page explains when charts are made.

Can you change the passenger name?

Only at a reservation office, at least 24 hours before departure, and once. The ticket can pass to a father, mother, brother, sister, son, daughter, husband or wife, or between government servants on duty. Tatkal tickets cannot be transferred.

For an e-ticket, take the printout, the original photo ID of one passenger and proof of the relationship, as IRCTC's e-ticket amendment note sets out. Student groups and marriage parties need 48 hours and a request from the head of the institution or party. There is no online name change.

Upgrading the class or going further

A ticket can move to a higher class on the same train and date, once, if a berth is free, by paying the fare difference and a fresh reservation fee with no cancellation charge (rule 12). The March 2026 reform allows this up to 30 minutes before departure; on board, the TTE can do it. The train fare calculator shows the fare in each class, and the Indian Railways train classes page what each class offers.

To go beyond your destination, tell the TTE before the train reaches it and pay for the extra distance, which is charged separately. If none of these fits, cancelling is the fallback: the train ticket refund calculator shows what comes back.
