Train fare calculator
The fare for any distance and class on Mail/Express trains, with every charge shown, from the official fare table in force since 26 December 2025.
How train fare is calculated
Indian Railways fare is the basic fare for your class and distance from the Railway Board fare table, plus a reservation fee, a superfast charge on superfast trains and a Tatkal charge if you book Tatkal. AC classes then pay 5% GST, and the total is rounded up to the next ₹5.
The table in use is Railway Board Commercial Circular 24 of 2025, in force from 26 December 2025. It sets fares in distance slabs: every 5 km up to 300 km, every 10 km to 1,000 km, every 25 km to 2,500 km and every 50 km to 5,000 km. A 3A ticket for 1,000 km on a superfast train works out as ₹1,236 basic fare, ₹40 reservation, ₹45 superfast and ₹66.05 GST, which rounds up to ₹1,390.

These are added per passenger on top of the basic fare, from page 4 of the same circular. A journey shorter than the minimum distance is charged as the minimum.

|---|---|---|---|
| Second sitting (2S) | ₹15 | ₹15 | 50 |
| Sleeper (SL) | ₹20 | ₹30 | 200 |

| AC first class (1A) | ₹60 | ₹75 | 300 |
Tatkal fare and GST
The Tatkal charge is 10% of the basic fare in second sitting and 30% in other classes, within a floor and a cap for each class, and it is worked out on at least a minimum distance. The Tatkal charge calculator shows the limits; Premium Tatkal is priced by demand and is not covered here.
GST of 5% applies to AC chair car, AC 3 economy, AC 3 tier, AC 2 tier and AC first class under Railway Board Commercial Circular 41 of 2017; sleeper and second sitting have none. It is charged on the whole fare, and the rounding to the next ₹5 comes after it.
Rounding: paragraph 5 of Commercial Circular 24 of 2025 rounds the total up to the next ₹5 after GST is added to the whole fare, and this calculator follows it. Commercial Circular 41 of 2017, which brought in GST on tickets, is less clear on the order, so a fare here can differ from the IRCTC screen by up to ₹5.
What this calculator leaves out
It covers ordinary Mail/Express trains. Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto, Vande Bharat, Humsafar and Tejas trains have their own fare rules, with catering usually charged separately, and IRCTC adds a convenience fee for online booking.
The peak fare in AC 2 tier and AC first class applies to popular trains all year, according to the circular, so the lean fare appears only on some trains in some months.
The fare does not decide when you can book. For that, the IRCTC ticket date calculator gives the opening day, and the train ticket refund calculator shows what comes back if you cancel.
