Times are India Standard Time. Authorised agents are blocked for the first 30 minutes of each window. Premium Tatkal, sold on some trains at a dynamic fare, opens at the same 10:00 and 11:00 times (IRCTC (Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation, the Indian Railways booking website and app), as reported by Onmanorama, April 2025). Tatkal costs extra: see the Tatkal charge calculator.
Sleeper Tatkal booking opens at 11:00 IST, one day before the train leaves its first station, not counting the journey day. Second sitting (2S) opens at the same time, AC classes an hour earlier at 10:00, and agents can book sleeper Tatkal only from 11:30.
The day follows the train, not you. If a sleeper train starts its run on Friday and you board it on Saturday morning further down the route, sleeper Tatkal for your seat opened on Thursday at 11:00. The time is the same on the IRCTC website, in the app and at station counters, and one Tatkal ticket takes at most four passengers.
The Tatkal charge in sleeper is 30% of the basic fare, at least ₹100 and at most ₹200, worked out on a minimum of 500 km; the Tatkal fare calculator gives the amount for your fare. Sleeper berths on busy routes go in the first minutes, so log in by 10:55 with the passengers saved in your master list. The Tatkal countdown timer counts down to 11:00 on a corrected IST clock.
AC 3 tier (3A), AC 2 tier (2A), AC 3 economy (3E), AC chair car (CC) and executive chair car (EC) open for Tatkal at 10:00 IST. Sleeper (SL) and second sitting (2S) open at 11:00 IST. First AC (1A) has no Tatkal quota. Agents start 30 minutes after each time.
| Class | Tatkal opens | Agents from | Tatkal charge |
|---|---|---|---|
| AC 3 tier (3A) | 10:00 | 10:30 | 30% of basic fare, ₹300 to ₹400 |
| AC 2 tier (2A) | 10:00 | 10:30 | 30%, ₹400 to ₹500 |
| AC chair car (CC) | 10:00 | 10:30 | 30%, ₹125 to ₹225 |

Times and charges are from IRCTC's Tatkal FAQ and Tatkal booking guide. One answer in that FAQ also leaves out executive class, while its timing and charge answers include it, so check the class list on the IRCTC screen for EC. The time is the same on the IRCTC website, in the app and at station counters; the Tatkal fare calculator works out the charge on your fare.
Four steps before the window, from linking Aadhaar to paying by UPI. The Tatkal countdown timer counts down to 10:00 and 11:00 on a corrected IST clock, with alarms and a practice run.
Tatkal for AC classes opens at 10:00 IST one day before the journey; sleeper and second sitting open at 11:00. Authorised agents are locked out for the first 30 minutes of each window, so 10:00 to 10:30 and 11:00 to 11:30 belong to individual users.
By 09:55 you should be logged in with the train search already showing the right date and class. At 10:00 the Book Now button becomes active. Pick the train, confirm the class, and the passenger form opens. The berths are held for you only once the form is submitted, which is why the master list matters more here than on any other booking.
Since 1 July 2025 the IRCTC account must be Aadhaar-verified to book Tatkal online, and since 15 July 2025 an OTP goes to the registered mobile during the booking (Ministry of Railways release of 11 June 2025). Keep that phone next to you; the OTP screen times out. The Tatkal booking checklist covers the account, master list and payment set-up.
If the class shows a waiting list at 10:02, decide fast. A Tatkal waiting list (TQWL) clears only from Tatkal cancellations, so a TQWL 15 on a short route is a gamble. The waitlist codes page explains the order in which lists clear.
The Tatkal timings have not changed since 15 June 2015: AC classes open at 10:00 IST and non-AC classes at 11:00 IST, one day before the journey. Searches for the Tatkal booking timings of 2021 or 2022 get the same answer as 2026.
| Period | AC Tatkal | Non-AC Tatkal | What changed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Before 15 June 2015 | 10:00 | 10:00 | All classes opened together |
| 15 June 2015 to 2024 | 10:00 | 11:00 | Windows split to spread the load on the booking system |
| 2025 | 10:00 | 11:00 | Aadhaar-only online from 1 July, OTP from 15 July, agents barred for the first 30 minutes |
| 2026 | 10:00 | 11:00 | No change to the clock times |
The split was reported by Business Today and Deccan Chronicle in June 2015. In April 2025, after posts claiming new Tatkal times went viral, IRCTC said no change in timings was proposed. What did change in 2025 is who can book in the first minutes, covered on the Aadhaar rule for IRCTC booking page.
Check Tatkal seat availability on IRCTC the evening before by searching your train with tomorrow's date and the Tatkal quota selected. Each class then shows AVAILABLE with a number, a Tatkal waiting list (TQWL) or REGRET.
Pick the class with berths left as your first choice and a second train as the fallback, so the morning is one search and one booking. What each status word means is on the IRCTC seat availability and PNR status codes page.
Tatkal costs more and refunds less. The charge is 10 percent of the basic fare in second sitting and 30 percent in every other class, within floors and caps per class; the Tatkal fare calculator gives the rupee figure. A confirmed Tatkal ticket is non-refundable if you cancel it (IRCTC e-ticket cancellation rules); the Tatkal cancellation guide covers the exceptions.
So if your date is still within the 60 day window and the general quota shows available, book general. Tatkal is for the case where the general quota is waitlisted or you only decided yesterday. For a trip you planned weeks ahead, the 60 days calculator and a reminder beat Tatkal every time.
10:00 IST for AC classes and 11:00 IST for sleeper and second sitting, one day before the train leaves its first station.
Tatkal booking starts one day before the journey. The Tatkal window opens at 10:00 IST for AC classes and at 11:00 IST for non-AC classes, sleeper and second sitting, counted from the day the train leaves its first station. The starting time is the same online and at counters.
3AC (AC 3 tier) opens at 10:00 IST with the other AC classes: 2A, 3E, CC and EC. Sleeper (SL) and second sitting (2S) open at 11:00 IST. Both are one day before the train leaves its first station.
11:00 IST, one day before the train leaves its first station. It is the same on the IRCTC website, the app and at station counters; authorised agents can book sleeper Tatkal only from 11:30.
No. Tatkal opens only one day before the train leaves its first station, not counting the journey day. For travel two or more days away, book in the general quota, which opens 60 days ahead at 08:00 IST.
Neither. Tatkal opens at a fixed clock time on the day before the journey: 10:00 for AC and 11:00 for sleeper. A train leaving at 06:00 on Friday opens for AC Tatkal at 10:00 on Thursday, 20 hours earlier.
The Tatkal charge is 10% of the basic fare in second sitting and 30% in other classes, within a floor and a cap per class: ₹100 to ₹200 in sleeper, ₹300 to ₹400 in AC 3 tier and ₹400 to ₹500 in AC 2 tier.
IRCTC's current terms set no separate daily Tatkal limit; each Tatkal ticket takes at most four passengers. Your account's monthly limit still applies: 12 tickets a month, or 24 with Aadhaar verification.
Tatkal has a fixed charge and a waiting list. Premium Tatkal, on selected trains, is sold online at a dynamic fare that rises as seats sell, with no waiting list; neither refunds a confirmed ticket on cancellation.
Since 1 July 2025 only Aadhaar-verified IRCTC users can book Tatkal online, since 15 July 2025 every Tatkal booking needs an OTP, and agents cannot book in the first 30 minutes (Railway Board Commercial Circular 8 of 2025).
Each train keeps only a small Tatkal quota, and on busy routes it sells in minutes. The Ministry of Railways said in June 2025 that bots made up to half of all login attempts in the first five minutes of Tatkal.
No. It is counted from the day the train leaves its first station, not counting that day. For a train starting on 24 December, Tatkal opens on 23 December, even if you board on 25 December.
Yes, online. Since 1 July 2025 only Aadhaar-authenticated IRCTC users can book Tatkal on the website or app, and since 15 July 2025 each booking also needs an OTP sent to the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar.
No. Authorised agents cannot book in the first 30 minutes: 10:00 to 10:30 for AC classes and 11:00 to 11:30 for non-AC classes.
IRCTC shows it when you try to book Tatkal for a date that has not opened yet. Tatkal opens only one day before the train leaves its first station. More on the message: date outside ARP. For general quota dates, use the IRCTC ticket date calculator.
